The Selfish Giant

In 2011 Springs Dance Company launched a brand new production of storytelling, puppetry and dance based on Oscar Wilde’s The Selfish Giant.

This delightful, well-loved story about a selfish, sad and lonely giant will be transformed by choreographer Darren Ellis and director Steve Stickley into a magical, inventive, and captivating show for families.

One day, the Giant returns from a seven year visit to his friend the Cornish Ogre to find children playing in his beautiful garden.

“What are you doing here?” he cries in a very gruff voice, and the children run away.
“My own garden is my own garden,” says the Giant; “any one can understand that, and I will allow nobody to play in it but myself.” So he builds a high wall all round it, and puts up a notice-board.

TRESPASSERS WILL BE PROSECUTED

Nobody wants to be with the Giant except the wind, rain and snow – not even the plants, and his garden remains locked in a wintery chill.

One morning as the Giant lies awake in bed, something is different…
